London producer bids to revolutionise the mead category

From drinksretailingnews.co.uk/news

Gosnells of Peckham has pledged to revolutionise the UK mead category by launching four new 4% abv cans of the honey-based tipple.
The firm operates London’s only meadery and it claims that these are the first canned meads to be produced in all of Europe.

“So many people think mead is something from the dark ages, strong, sickly sweet, the preserve of Vikings and knights, something that you find at the back of the drinks cupboard after a particularly long night,” said founder Tom Gosnell. “Our mead is the polar opposite: light, fresh, and complex.
“These new 4% abvmeads reflect our place as a London brand, based in Peckham: complex, on-the-pace, multifaceted and fun. They are experimental and plucky, like our hero bee, but with flavours to bring a smile to even the most cultured palate.”

Gosnells’ new “concoctions of deliciousness” include:
Gosnells Citra Sea: a blend of honey, lemon, tarragon and Citra hops, with a salty finish, designed to be paired with tacos al pastor, satay, and chicken dishes.
Gosnells Hibiscus: Gosnells’ only pink mead, brewed with hibiscus flowers for a fruity, tart finish and paired with Thai curry, smoked salmon and grilled fish.
Gosnells Hopped: inspired by juicy IPAs, spiced with big hops for a long, dry, floral finish, paired with spicy foods such as kebabs, Cajun and chilli dishes, Tandoor curries or lamb bhuna.
Gosnells Sour: described as “a backstreet kid, with layers of attitude and a puckering sourness intermingling with honey notes”, paired with tempura vegetables, deep fried oysters, omelettes, samosas or stinky cheeses.

The firm will be selling four-packs for £15 on its website from August, and it is accepting orders from the trade as it bids to “rock the market”.

“Gosnells was born in Peckham in 2014 after I was hooked by the buzz for mead whilst touring the US east coast,” said Gosnell.  “I was instantly enthralled by this golden honeyed liquid and decided to set up London’s first meadery in 500 years.
“Historically, most meads were as strong as wine, but we decided to opt for a much lower alcohol strength. All four of the new canned meads are packed with flavour and so they are amazing accompaniments to many foods.
“Why drink 12-14% wine when you can drink something just as complex and elegant at 4%?
“We think the cans will rock the market and introduce a whole wave of new drinkers to mead, while sitting neatly with our 75cl Gosnells Original at 5.5%, Vintage 2018 at 12% and our monthly limited editions.
“Cans are quick to chill, light, stackable in the fridge, easy to recycle, and have none of glass’s negative potential at festivals. This format really suits mead well.”
